NEIGHBORS.

Jesus described a neighbor as someone we encounter who is in need and encouraged us to treat them well. On many occasions that need might appear right under our noses.

Elizabeth, who is known by many of the members of one Common Change group (and who does baby-sitting for them) plays the violin and was falling behind other students in her orchestra. They were able to receive private lessons which she could not afford. The Common Change group decided to encourage her by paying for four private lessons to help her catch up.

Might there be a need you and some friends could meet that is right in front of you?

Real People. Real [and natural] Birth.

JOY.

A new baby is an absolute joy, but they can be expensive.

Claire’s older sister was pregnant and the baby was due in 3 weeks. Hoping for a natural birth, there was only one hospital in their city that does that with the help of a midwife. But to give birth there would mean needing to pay a $500 co-pay which was not covered by their insurance. Friends and family had been extremely generous already with various pregnancy-related costs and thankfully Claire’s Common Change group was able to step in and cover $400. A healthy baby girl was born and her middle name, Abigael means ‘gives joy’.

You can be part of this kind of giving too. Head on over to the register page and get started.

Real People. Real Technol… People!

It’s funny how a story that looks to be all about technology is actually so much more about simply being human in the best of ways:

As the people behind the scenes of Common Change, trying to make it all happen well, we sometimes feel a bit like that.

Waitaminute… are we a technology company? Then how is it we are always checking on links and reporting bugs and working on UI?

And then a new need is presented, and the group weighs in, each person giving an idea as to how we might be able to meet that need well, and a gift is sent.

A life is changed. Or at the very least encouraged. As not just a friend, but a whole community of people who maybe don’t even all know that person have said, “We’re behind you on this! We’ve got your back!”

Suddenly, there is it. The reminder why an organisation that is all about people, sometimes has to look and feel like it is all about technology. We do the technology so that you can invest in the lives of those you know, who at this particular moment in their life, might be in some kind of need.

This is what Common Change is all about – and we are so glad to have you be a part of it.

Real People. Real Healing.

STRONG.

Ever find that helping someone else has cost you?

That happened to Beth, who has spent the last ten years doing community development work in places like Afghanistan. During an internship in Africa, Beth contacted an intestinal bacteria. A friend of Beth shared her need with her Common Change group and they were able to pay the $200 needed to cover the prescription.

Who do you know that might be involved in some really great work but has a need they are struggling to meet?

Did you ever find yourself in a place where the battles seem to just keep adding up?

Joy has a couple in her adult Sunday School class who are both retired and both sadly battling with cancer. One particular month Jeff had to undergo a new round of chemo which, with the new meds, was causing additional financial strain.

By sharing the story with her Common Change group, they were able to help out with $200 which helped get them back on track, while being a huge encouragement to them both.

By signing up for Common Change, you begin the journey of finding others you know who would be up for putting together some money every month to build a fund which you can then use to meet needs of those you know.

Real People. Real Fresh Start.

MERCY. Ever needed to erase the past? Rachel is a student of one of our Common Change members. Abandoned by her father at a young age, she ended up in a local homeless shelter. Aiming to save enough money to move into an apartment with friends, Rachel started looking for work. Some of the places she applied to made mention of the fact that they preferred their employees not to have tattoos. Her friend’s Common Change group gave her $179 towards the first three treatments (towards removing the small tattoo she had on her wrist) at a local medical facility. Imagine how many fresh starts you and a group of friends can be a part of if you become a member of  a Common Change group and start committing a small amount of money to your group fund every month? Sign up here.

GOOD NEWS.

A Common Change group member decided to ‘adopt’ a family for Christmas.

Louise, the mom, in her fifties, has been diagnosed with lung cancer leading to her 16 year old son and sister having to take care of her. She was sleeping on the couch and her two grandsons, who she adopted, were sleeping on dirty mattresses on the floor. When Richard’s Common Change group heard about this, they gave $300 to get new beds, sheets and mattresses, but they also found the beds on Craigslist, collected them and took them over and helped assemble them with her boys.

A very special Christmas gift for a family who has been through a whole lot.

It is so easy for you to become a part of telling your own stories like this. Find some friends who would be up to doing this with you. Then register on Common Change, form your group and get giving.

Real People. Real Lifeline.

JUSTICE.

Can you imagine your identity being stolen?

This happened to Keith, a friend and co-worker of a Common Change member. A DMV nightmare ensued with DUIs and traffic tickets resulting in Keith’s license being suspended. Jill’s Common Change group was able to pay the $1700 needed to free up his license so he could work again while pursuing legal action for the stolen identity. Once more, a group working together was able to achieve more than any of the individuals on their own could have done.

PATIENCE .

Ever had a vehicle blow up and leave you stranded?

Michaela’s dad was driving her younger sister back to college when his car’s transmission blew on the highway. They were stranded and had to walk to a local hotel room to spend the night. By sharing the need with her Common Change group, they were able to send $90 to cover the room and allow him to rent a car the next day to make it back home.

What simple needs like this might you and a group of friends become a part of meeting?
